Major: Economics (This Major's Salary over time)
I very happy with Ohio Wesleyan University. Three things that I would like to say to people looking at this site:1) Disregard the majority of negative comments about OWU on THIS site. They are so obviously written by the same disgruntled person. It may very well be the case that this person doesn't even go to Ohio Wesleyan since the comments have nothing to do with the reality of the college. That person consistenly seems to comment about the prestige and the academics of OWU. On the prestige point, OWU speaks for itself! The faculty is first-rate. The students go on to some of the best graduate schools in the nation. Do yourself a favor and ask the admissions office when you come and visit the campus. On the academic side, I think the school is very challenging. I think the science departments, the economics departments are especially challenging. I do have an extremely high SAT, went to Phillips Academy and while I do have excellent grades at Ohio Wesleyan University, I had to work my butt off to get them! And I learned a lot in my courses! There are negative things about OWU, but the ones that appear on this site are simply not true.2) There are several things that make OWU one of the leading liberal arts colleges: challenging academics, ability to do independent studies and primary research with first-rate faculty members, outstanding placement rate in graduate schools, excellent library and an one of the biggest collections for libraries of OWU's size. Additionally, OWU's international population is second only to Bryn Mawr and Macalester! Some 15% of the student body comes from all over the world. Now, this kind of diversity is rare at liberal arts schools! 3) I considered OWU when I was looking at Vassar College, Bates College, University of Chicago and Gettysburg College. Ohio Wesleyan just felt right when I visited the campus. I really liked the fact that students are really challenged in the classroom and have enriching lives outside of it: sports, extracurricular activities, community service. In my field, Economics, there was a graduate who graduated the same year I came who went on to Stanford University to get his PhD. Several others have done the same at really outstanding schools in Economics: Yale, Johns Hopkins, and Cornell. I am not sure if I will get a PhD or not, but it was reassuring that other bright students managed to get into them.
