Major: Chemistry (This Major's Salary over time)
I transferred to Macalester after one year at an entirely different school, Harvey Mudd College. There's nothing in particular wrong with HMC, unless you care greatly about having your spirit crushed.Macalester, on the other hand, is great for the archetypical liberal arts student. You can get a well-rounded education (when not in chem or physics classes, I enjoy the printmaking and other arts classes offered), while participating in sports, theatre, or any of the numerous other student groups on campus.Life isn't all fun and games, of course. The professors are willing to help and are very accessible, but they won't coddle you if you're not fulfilling your obligations as a student. Don't expect much grade inflation if you're planning on going into chemistry or one of the other tougher majors here. This all isn't bad necessarily, just important to know, if you plan on going somewhere where it's easier to graduate than it is to get accepted. Then there's the bad. Even though it's a small school, some of the students have problems with being part of a small community. Small instances of vandalism and disrespect (smashed lights, broken windows) happen more often than one would expect from a traditionally hippie school. Also, the administration is a bit distant from the student body; usually no problems arise from this, however. On the whole, Macalester is a wonderful liberal arts school in the middle of a couple of exciting mid-sized cities, with smart, amiable students, in addition to some minor problems expected of any community founded in the real world. If I had to do it over again, I would have come to Macalester in the first place.
