Attending Mount Holyoke made a big difference in my life—mostly because I learned a lot about myself. I was 16 when I started at MHC and 20 when I graduated; these are very formative years. The education was well-rounded but not very useful when I searched for a job; the first job I was able to get was as a receptionist. I think this is an issue for liberal arts schools in general. If I had gotten better advice, I would have chosen a more applicable major for work than studio art. But back when I was in school, there weren't any advisors that directed a student into work-related majors. I ended up going to graduate school to obtain a more work-oriented degree (MBA).

I loved the college campus and the isolation from men—because I was a very shy person. Being at MHC helped me discover my strengths and gave me the self-confidence I was lacking. But the fact that there are no men on campus meant that it also is difficult to date men in a realistic setting—all your contacts are in non-academic and (to me) rather artificial settings like mixers. Maybe this has changed since my days at MHC—I hope so!

MHC was my first break from home and made me learn to take care of myself, even if it was a sheltered environment (i.e., I didn't have to rent an apartment or get a job). The academic excellence really didn't impact me since I was in a field where grades didn't matter—I wasn't trying to get a job in that field. But I'm thankful for the various opportunities that MHC gave me to learn about other fields, even if I didn't work in them. The area I ended up in (computer-related work) wasn't taught at MHC (then; don't know about now).
