Kind of arrogant going into college. Got into some Ivy Leagues and other schools, but had MET in state funding, so went to Michigan for engineering. Then got average grades, and realized that the people here were really a lot smarter than me—a humbling experience. Despite average grades, ended up getting a job at a top engineering company, competed with Berkeley, Illinois, and UCLA peers, and still ended up doing very well. The engineering campus sucks because it's totally detached from central campus and there isn't much food there, and the winters also suck. Diversity is kind of a joke, if you're from California or New York or Chicago, but relatively diverse if you're from a mid sized city. The people are friendly, open minded, and very smart, but they tend not to talk about academics—in other words, they perform in class, but avoid talking about academics out of class, which is a good thing. Classes were very time consuming in engineering, but definitely got a heads up once I started working.
