William and Mary is a great college with many of the resources of a larger university. The rigor of the coursework in my major (and electives), the superb faculty, the tremendous quality of the medium-sized student body (avg. SAT of 1350 and rising) and the beauty of the campus were all reasons I decided on W&M. After 4 years, I haven't been dissapointed. Already in graduate school, I feel blessed with my William and Mary education and prepared for my programme.

The College is a good place to think about if 1)you are very motivated and self-directed 2)you can thrive with stress 3)you want to be a part of a campus community where nearly every student in school lives on campus 4) you know yourself and want to be challenged 5)aren't afraid to try new things. This school is not a place to consider if you are interested in: 1)Gut or "filler" courses 2)You want to live the rockstar/clubbing/urban lifestyle 3)You want to cheer your school on to victory in front of many thousands of fans and ESPN 4)You want a free ride. While there are many myths about William and Mary that aren't all true, here is one truth: if you come to W&M, be prepared to work hard. If you work hard you will be part of an alumni network that is extremely well connected and you will succeed in any arena.

One final note- The beauty of William and Mary in relation to peer schools is size. While not as small as LAC's like Bowdoin, Washington and Lee, Williams, Carleton etc or as large as Universities like Michigan, Cal, Virginia, UNC, Penn State. W&M fits in nicely with schools like Wake Forest, Brown, Richmond, Dartmouth, Emory, Georgetown and Vanderbilt. If you are one that pays attention to college rankings in magazines, you will note that W&M's ranking among public Uni's is #6 and among all Uni's is #31. Not bad for a school that is often compared to schools 2 or 3 times it's size. With a $500 million dollar capital campaign and a 10 building construction plan from now until 2008, W&M is poised to continue to be a top destination for the best and brightest.
