East Carolina is a great teacher-education school, and its graduates more or less stock and manage the public schools of eastern North Carolina. True to themselves, most of the graduates have a keen sense of practicality and warmly connect with almost anyone they meet. Intellectuality is suspect, however; if it's not going to help you relate to people or to your job, what's the point? Profound conversations are experienced as signs of depression, and the average graduate would rather not "go there." Just the same, some of the smartest people I ever met were alumni of East Carolina University selling used cars. As for the professors, the ones I had were more than competent and really decent people. But then there are the two or three you maybe hear about, in prison for murder or rape, yet still reputedly good at their jobs.
