The University of Hawaii at Hilo has a beautiful campus, very tranquil. Most of the students are friendly, I met some of the kindest people here. The school planned a lot of field trips at the beginning of the semester, such as whale watching, hiking, volcano, and beach trips. The city of Hilo is a definite negative, everything closes early and it gets dark around 6:30-7 year round. Therefore it can be quite creepy taking a walk or going to the grocery store at this time, especially if you're female. The local men drive around in monster pick up trucks insisting you take a ride, a lot of piggy behavior. No one goes out to bars and the only way to find nightlife is if you drive 2-3 hours to kona for an expensive weekend. You do have Richardson beach about 3 miles away, which is beautiful on a sunny day …however it does rain ALOT here!! If you decide to attend UH Hilo, which I recommend you don't, make sure you have a car, a lot of money for food, a giant umbrella and raincoat, and watch out for off-campus housing! The professors I had were good, I took an intensive pre-calculus course which met 4 days a week, I had an excellent professor. The classes tend to be small and the professors actually learn your name and are helpful. This school needs to update their lab equipment and material .
