Be sure to think very carefully about SLC, as it's motto proudly proclaims it is different. I felt discouraged with a relatively undiverse student body (academically, politically, ethnically, and socioeconomically) there is a extraordinary consensus of liberal. This is tricky though because students just try to shout the loudest without necessarily considering maybe what can be considered to be 'the wider picture.' The quality of the teacher is unparalleled, and NYC is of course also unparalleled.

I wasn't the average SLC student, so needless to say I haven't found the extra curriculars or the social life fitting my needs. There is plenty to do, I think, if you are involved in Gay/Lesbian/Queer Rights issues or the performing arts. Sometimes, otherwise, it is difficult to participate. The school sometimes promotes individualism at the cost of a cohesive community and I found myself quite discouraged by that. Also be prepared to become quite cynical at SLC—few people smile, etc.

Ultimately though, the education is extraordinary. Professors are the MOST accessible here, I don't care what other people say about their small schools, where else do you sit down and talk with your professor one on one as part of your course work? The writing and reading are intense, the class discussions rewarding, and the individual attention from faculty (Note, note the administration, which is truly another flaw of the school) is fantastic.
