I chose MSU because it had the only accredited journalism school in Michigan and I couldn't afford to go out of state. (I attended in '94-'98.) But I am very happy that I made the choice I did.

First, East Lansing is a fun town. If you're coming from a big city like Chicago or NYC or something, you'll probably find it dull. But I always found plenty to do there. (OK, my main activity was partying.) There are plenty of parties and bars if you're into that…but if you're not, no one is going to hold it against you.

Second, the campus is beautiful. But be warned: It is LARGE—I believe one of the largest in the nation. And winter can be pretty dang cold. I strongly suggest that if you must take classes that are very far from your dorm/house/apartment, you take them fall semester. Spring semester will have you trudging across campus in January, February and March, three particularly brutal months in Michigan, and you will be miserable and skip class entirely too often. I strongly recommend you have a bike for the warm months and a bus pass for the cold ones.

Third, MSU is a great school. No, it is not Harvard, but you get a good education from some very fine professors. I was very happy with my experience in the school of journalism, and felt fully prepared for my first job.
