Major: English (This Major's Salary over time)
I'm currently a sophomore concentrating in Writing (Poetry) and Literature. I transferred from University of Wisconsin-Madison to Eugene Lang College for a few reasons: 1. The writing program here has a much stronger reputation. 2. New York City (which means internships, opportunities to go to more museums, galleries, concerts, and other events). I have my share of beef with the New School University. They're completely incompetent when it comes to paperwork. The housing should be much better for the amount of money we're paying them. They don't spend much money on the students (for perks that an average college student would enjoy). Eugene Lang College doesn't really foster a "student community" atmosphere. And I do miss the "traditional college experience" that I had at UW-Madison (with the football games that I never attended, frat parties, and just all of the silliness). But the way I'm looking at it is… I'm paying Eugene Lang College to leave me alone and give me some space to grow into a strong adult. They don't require you taking classes that are irrelevant to your concentration. They don't hold you by the hand like many other colleges and have it be a continuation of high school. You're pretty much in charge of your education and how hard (or not) you work. I don't like saying this, but the average Lang student is a chain-smoking hipster. You're not going to see a lot of "normal" here. I'm guilty of, but also tired of this competition to be the "weirdest" with the other students. There are a lot of intelligent people here and there are also a lot that talk out of their ass. Just pray that you end up in classes with people who want to learn. Overall, I'm very sure that I've benefited (even though it may not have been in a comfortable manner). Consider this school if you can discipline yourself, if you are sure of where you want to go, and if you care more about passion than practicality. I'd also like to add that their internship program is amazing. Renee Alexander is an energetic woman with impressive connections!
