Truman State was the best decision I could have made for a school. It gave a great level of eduction without turning you into a number. I looked at going to journalism school at Missouri - one of the best in the country, but there was no opportunity to get involved. At a smaller school like Truman I was able to get really involved with everything. By the time I left I had worked at the TV station, radio station, newspaper and magazine all in significant contributing roles. At Mizzou I would have been lucky to get one article published. Nearly all the professors are accessible and knowledgeable. They are trying to make sure all profs have PHd's which is good and bad because it muscles out some great teachers. The campus is beautiful and the buildings are great. The dorms could use a little work, but I hear they are building a new dorm soon. Kirksville on the surface looks and sounds like a crap-hole but as a city boy growing up, I learned to love my surroundings. There's one of the best state parks I know of in Kirksville and anyone who is a creative person who can actually think of doing something on the weekend besides getting wasted can find a great time in Kirksville. You need to understand that you aren't going to school in Chicago, but the relative seclusion of the campus keeps students there on the weekends so there are more groups and activities rather than being a commuter school. I'm an average student and the classes were very challenging but just the right amount. Frat levels are pretty high here due to the rural location which to me is upsetting but if that's your thing I guess it's available. If you're big into sports I would go to Mizzou, Truman students are very academically minded and really don't give a shit about sports or the sports teams, it doesn't help that most of them aren't very good but they lead the country in swimming, rugby and roller hocker of all things! I wish Truman were a more diverse campus, it's pretty white, but I will say all groups are respected and represented. The campus is very Christian and the campus christian groups carry large memberships and can be very one minded about a lot of things. Truman is a public school but Missouri is pretty christian conservative. If that's not your thing you're fine, just know that it's not San Fransisco. Overall I loved my experience and would definately do it over again.
