My years at Dartmouth were among the best in my life. My classes were almost universally excellent, and were taught by professors who were passionate about their subjects and truly enjoyed teaching. The focus at Dartmouth really is on undergraduate education, and the faculty is very approachable and very accessible.

The students at Dartmouth are its greatest asset. The school attracts brilliant and creative people, who are willing to work hard but who are also able to relax and have fun. I always enjoyed the way I could just stumble into a stimulating conversation at any time, in any random place on campus. Education was not limited to the classroom…it was not really that unusual for a stimulating or contentious classroom discussion to be revived in the dining hall or dorm, sometimes at three in the morning. It is possible to get a great education at most colleges in America, and there are very bright and friendly people in every academic environment. What makes places like Dartmouth distinctive is the extraordinarily high concentration of these people.

The campus was and is still among the most beautiful in America. This is especially true when the leaves change in the fall, but every season has its strengths. The winters are cold, but everyone just bundles up and finds ways to enjoy it. Many students learn to ski (the school has its own skiway just 15 minutes away), and there are lots of ways to stay warm. I did not join a fraternity, and still had a great social life. The frat parties are open to all students, and there is plenty to do even if you choose to avoid them. Hanover is a small town, but it has all the essentials. West Lebanon is just a few exits down the highway, and has a Borders, restaurants and shopping. Dartmouth itself is the cultural mecca for the region, and the school brings in concerts and entertainment. And if you really needed a break, Boston is only 2+ hrs away, Montreal only 3+ hrs away.

My education at Dartmouth prepared me well for medical school (and no doubt helped me get in to one of the best). If I had it all to do over, I would return in a heartbeat.
