I’m assuming most who are reading these comments are high school seniors who are desperate to gain true and unbiased insight into the nature and disposition of collegiate institutions. Let me first say my mental representation of the University of Illinois is largely based on the person I am compared to the environment I’ve been surrounded with. Because this is such a large an diverse campus and I am only a first year male, I will attempt to explain my perception of the U of I while making some assumptions based on limited knowledge and experience. It was only yesterday when I was sitting at home reading these comments wondering whether I would take on the largely pointless endeavor to fill this thing out. The University is dying. Ideally, the pursuance of a higher education was to separate those who were fit to expand their minds by the systematic implementation of new thoughts and ideas from those who weren’t. Those who weren’t were either incapable of achieving these ends or merely disinterested. Today, college is a means to an end. Your parents have been slaving their lives away, or maybe you have, to pay for a piece of paper. That paper isn’t anything special, and it doesn’t matter what it says on it, (Harvard, Pomona) but rather gives you credibility over those who lack such a paper to be better equipped to do a certain task (i.e. a job) for someone else. Therefore, college is truly a financial investment.(in the modern sense) College is an extension of formal education to better foster a productive workforce. Most things learned at college, especially the University of Illinois, are unimportant and have no true or insightful meaning, they are merely given to you to occupy your time and prepare to be a productive member of society. To be honest, to procure an adequate GPA at the University of Illinois as a non-science or mathematics major, you could work less than 1 hour a day. The rest of the time is given to you for achieving whatever ends you have given yourself. Ideally, these ends should be the transfer of ideas and knowledge between people through conversation or the dissemination of information through different media.(i.e. books, internet) But, this aspect of intellectual richness and the search for knowledge is dead, at least at this University. From my personal perception, the men and women at the University of Illinois are largely unconcerned with and even scared of confronting deep and insightful topics. Everyone seems to be swimming together "downstream." Obviously, this tyranny of repetition has created an overt disillusionment with my experience at Illinois. Athletics, video games, and the pursuit of mental impairment (drinking) have pervaded the campus life. It is depressing to see so many young and potentially great minds falling victim to the relentless tide of the times, or the apathetic attitude toward truth and knowledge. This University is everything the true University isn’t. Illinois is a perfect example of how a highly capitalistic society can manipulate every aspect of life to cheapen its value by adding a competitive, business-like, and superficial edge. The University is living on its own falsehoods. If you’re a thinker, this is not the place for you. Most people here are generally unaware of the forces at work that are affecting them and even if they knew the extent that their motivation and their perception of reality is being flawed by societal falsehoods, they wouldn’t care. Go here if you’re an average person who wants the typical collegiate sub-culture of booze, Greeks, and working to satisfy the need for a diploma.
