I loved my time at Wake Forest, but I agree it isn't for everyone. As a minority student, I never felt out of place or like I was being ignored, but I think many of my friends did. The racial make up of WF was something I was used to because my high school was not that diverse. I was thrilled to see other black students with high aspirations and academic achievements; it was a totally different group of peers than what I dealt with in high school and that impressed me. I struggled academically at first because I was not used to having to put in the time that I had to in order to make good grades. I almost lost my scholarship, but the Learning Center was a lifesaver (and money save for my parents). WF provides a lot of resources for its students if they choose to take advantage. All too often I believe students wait for people to coax them into doing what needs to be done. Students need to take some initiative and ask for the help before the matter gets out of hand. Students also need to realize, whereas in high school they may have been the top dog, when you come to Wake, there is always going to be somebody smarter than you, more outgoing than you, driving a nicer car than you, skinnier than you (boy is this ever true!); but I think it gave me a greater appreciation of the unique differences in my peers. Even the frat guys that were highly annoying with their one sided way of thinking contributed in some positive form to the climate of campus. I loved my experience, absolutely LOVED IT and I feel a great debt to Wake for what the university and community gave to me. I was that out of place girl in high school, yet I managed to fit in at Wake. My parents would agree that it was worth every penny and is still worth every penny that I give back as an alum.
