I grew up in Juneau and was never planning on going to UAS, but have spent two years here in order to save money and take advantage of the foreign exchange program. I will be transferring to another school next year because I feel that although UAS has a few great professors, its definitely not a top quality education. It felt somewhat like high school part two, with not very challenging courses and a lot of people whose only interest was to get wasted every weekend. Theres also an unfortunate lack of extracurricular activities. However, UAS is a beautiful campus and there are a bountiful number of activities if youre into the wilderness. There is a heavy party scene at the dorms as well, which I suppose can be fun, but also tiring if youre looking for a bit more intellectual stimulation. Profs are of course easily accesible and classes are small; this is a small town college. I would recommend UAS for anyone who loves the outdoors and doesnt want to spend too much on college; looking to learn a little, but not have a college experience that will change their life and send them rocketing off to Harvard law school. We sometimes refer to academics at UAS as "a joke", but Id say its pretty much what you make of it. All in all, I was not unhappy with my experience, but am glad to be moving on to something different. There were certainly a few professors that I was very impressed by, including the one who ecouraged me to study abroad, which I am doing now for relatively cheap. And I find that I truely miss Juneau, a friendly little town that you either love or you cant wait to get out of (theres no road, sorry - boat or plane).
