The College of William and Mary was an excellent undergraduate school. To be honest, I was a devotee from a very early age, and I never applied to any other school because W&M had everything I wanted. When I got there, however, I was reinforced in my expectations. The student body, though not diverse in some ways, is composed of intelligent and accepting individuals. The professors are incredible, especially considering their low salaries- the fact that some of them are at W&M, given what they could make at other schools, attests to their devotion to education and the public school experience. In particular, my experiences with the Psychology department, the Religion department, the Music department, and the Classical Studies department stand out as exemplary experiences. The work is very hard, but forces one to apply critical thinking skills and research skills - multiple choice tests are thankfully rare. When I was accepted into graduate school, I did not have as much research experience as other students because I did not go to a large university with a large graduate population. However, most of my professors have commented on the high level of my critical thinking skills, my comfort with abstract concepts and conversations, and my strong writing skills.

I do have a few recommendations for those considering the college. Please put aside stereotypes and go spend some time near or at W&M before you make a final decision on attending. If any overnight or weekend visits are offered, go so that you can experience both the academic and social aspects of the school. Also, when applying to any school, consider your major before you go- for example, W&M has certain programs that are known to be strong, and those that receive less attention and funding. If you want a high-quality education, and especially if you intend to apply to graduate schools after graduation, the reputation and education in your specific department will be just as important as the overall reputation of the school.
