Emory is a nice private university. It is expensive, and many of the people that go there definitely reflect the high cost of admission in their high standard of living. The socioeconomic strata at Emory starts pretty high, but that doesn't mean the school isn't a diverse bunch. Yes, there are a lot of Long Islanders, but you don't HAVE to strictly associate, and there are plenty of people from all parts of the country (and the globe) and various ethnic and economic backgrounds with which to associate to satisfy your edacious appetite for friends.

The course load at Emory is what you make of it. I used to be a science/premed student, and that course load is completely different from my current political science/history majors' course load. The science classes are very cut and dry, many quite large (60-150 students) and the material is very tough. Intro courses, in any subject, are not great, but necessary. The best courses are those in the 300 and above levels, and many can be reached without many intro courses. The faculty are very nice, and many will meet with you at just about whatever time you ask them to. Very few of the teachers are NOT excited to teach the subject they are teaching, and they are almost all erudite in the subject at hand and rarely excessively prolix.

As far as extra cirriculars are concerned, don't expect much in the field of ultra competitive sports. Emory is the birthplace of intramural sports, and it shows. There are plenty of opportunities for friendly games in many different sports, but the Division III athletic offered, while competitive, are extremely unrepressented in terms of both overall student interest school spirit. Besides sports, there are plenty of other clubs and such for all types of people. You can join an ambulance service, become a newspaper editor, go bungee jumping, whatever your heart desires. If a club doesn't offer what you want, you can always start your own club too.
