Overall, I really benefitted from my education at The University of Akron. The College of Education leaves much to be desired, but the courses I took to fulfil my social studies requirements were amazing. All of the professors I had from the history and political science department were great; well-spoken, full of knowledge, and helpful. I learned a lot of my study and research habits from them (ironically, not from my education professors) and I believe I am a great teacher today because of the experiences I had with those professors. Student teaching and then actually getting out there and teaching will help you more than the education courses at the college will.

If I had to do it over again, I would still attend Akron but spend more time on campus. People talk about how it is such a commuter campus (and that's true), but you will get what you put into it. Stay on campus for the weekends. Go to the events that the programming board puts on and join a fraternity or sorority. The great thing about Greek life at Akron is that all kinds can be a part of it. Believe me, I live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina now and Greek life at UNC is extremely different. You have to be a certain "type" to join most chapters here (i.e. you are rich). At Akron, there were all types of chapters and all were accepting of everyone, no matter what your bank account was or looks were or who your parents were.

The best advice I can give is to stay on campus at all times. Even if you are a commuter, get to know people that live on campus so you can bunk up w/ them once and awhile. Stay for the parties, and hang out at the local bars when you can (there are a lot of them, and they are so fun!)

I had an amazing experience at Akron and miss it there a lot. Anytime my husband and I head back to Ohio, I look up my old college friends and love seeing what's new with the campus.

Good luck!
