Let me start by saying thanks to all my professors at Cal Poly Pomona. For without the education they freely gave, I'd probably still be working at Costco. Upon graduation from Cal Poly in 1996, I moved back to Tacoma in search of a job with Boeing, but to my dismay they had a hiring freeze. Luckily, I was able to find a job with the City of Tacoma Water Department in the Water Supply group where I am now very happy. Here are some things that I really enjoy about my job:
  • Everyone in my group is a certified Professional Engineer (P.E.), with the exception of the drafter. They're my source of knowledge, my professors in the real world. And because of them, I took the Engineering in Training (EIT) and passed. My next goal is to pass the P.E. test.
  • I actually got to design a control center for a water pump station and actually work with an electrician on getting it wired up. It's a great feeling to see your design materialize before your very eyes. The circuit design is almost always altered in some way or another in the wiring stage, but the functions of the design remain the same.
  • I'm always doing something different! My task is never mundane. And I rarely ever get stressed out from work when I get home. One of the classes I wish I'd have paid more attention to is Power Engineering. I have to deal with sizing transformers, motors, and pumps a lot. But I've managed to learn all that I need to know and more from my co-workers.
