I was a student athlete, on the volleyball team. The professors, and system was set up to help us because we had to miss a lot of classes. They did do that, but the courses were harder because I could not attend all classes, due to the volleyball commitment. The courses that I took my first semester, had no rhyme or reason, other than these classes were still open, and they did not interfere with volleyball practice or game time. Believe it or not, I did not even take Freshman English. As a transfer to another school I have had to do some "catching up", but that is behind me now (summer school was a great help). I had to leave after only one semester because of the serious binge drinking among the athletes. I did not wish to join them in their partying, and as a result felt threatened by my teammates. They knew that their only safety was in numbers, and that I was not joining them. I did approach my coach, and was told that I am nieve, that I should buck up and deal with it, and that there was nothing that could be done about it. I then decided that there was something I could do about it and proceeded to transfer to another university. I am really surprised that the administration did not want to deal with the drinking problem, especially in light of the fact that there was a murder on the men's basketball team several years ago. The attitude was, well that happened off campus, and we can't control that. Well, there was drinking in the women's Freshman athletic dorm. Liquor was hidden in the dropped ceiling. My biggest complaint, is that due to the extreme schedule that we kept there was NO TIME to find any other friends. If I had not been on the team, I would probably still be at Baylor today.
