Avoid this school if possible. While some other public universities are often excellent, this is not one of them. Stony Brook is an impersonal large university. Some faculty have classes of 300 students, and are overworked. Therefore they don't have time for students, and have a generally stand-off attitude.

Teaching staff is very "International", which means very few of them can communicate effectively in English.

Administrative staff keeps their eyes closed to studet needs, and keeps the bureaucracy flowing along. Your cries for help and complaints will go unanswered.

The students for the most part are tough-guys and "what-you-lookin-at" girls New Yorkers from Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island, who are unapproachable and travel home on weekends. Therefore the campus is empty on thw weekends. Socially, cliques are strong, and racial lines are prominent.

A horrible experience. I have attended colleges elsewhere, and none were the horror show that is Stony Brook. I transferred to a private university in New York City, and had a incredible experience.
