Impersonal large public University. Facilities are terrible, and faculty is very disinterested in the student body. The teaching assistants are very "international" which translates to "don't speak English". I have had classes with over 300 people in them. By all means a throroughly horrific experience. Those who actually like Stony Brook have never experienced better. I transferred to a private University, and discovered in comparison how horrible the social, academic, and physical condition of Stony Brook is. Please, don't go if you have an option. Unless you have alot of friends from Queens, Brooklyn, or Long Island, and can blend with the cliques and racial lines, you will be an outsider. Intellectualism is rare, mostly alot of attitude from both the students, and the faculty. The bureaucracy is also beyond all control. You are a peon to the administration, and the arrogance is revolting. Having attended other schools, I say this unbiased, there are much better schools out there, many are not very far from Stony Brook.
