Although I graduated way back in the 70's I have stayed in touch and I don't think the culture has changed that much. I really enjoyed most of my teachers and classes and found some facutly to be especially open and available. The problem, as many have noted is that the school is simply too small. That is why I wrote that I would have gone to a different school. The reason I did not transfer out is a) I transferred IN after my freshman year elsewhere, and b) I was not miserable at Bennington. In fact, most of my academic ratings were quite positive, but let's not forget how important social life and atmosphere is. The other students were not "unfriendly" but there was not a really fun vibration or warmth. Am I asking too much? To thrive there you must know what you want because you don't get much direction and you must be self-motivated. Nobody pushes anyone to do things. Although it has some small college advantages like small classes and teacher availability, people can still fall through the cracks. The assumption is that everyone is mature enough to take care of themselves. Fact is, we were not, so some people were in various sorts of distress and nobody really noticed. Maybe that is true everywhere. Maybe that's just college. Bottom line: You have to be "mature," self-motivated and interested in lots of different things. You can't go there to just study one subject, because you literally might be stuck with just one or two faculty members as guides…
