The party scene at Swarthmore isn't huge or diverse, but even when it's lame (often), it's not that bad if you're with a group of good friends and dress up and dance all ridiculous. Being self-conscious sort of loses its point when you're on a tiny campus, and for most students I know that's one of the best things about Swarthmore. It's not some place for ugly, awkward dweebs go to hide from the world for a few years. That's bullshit. Some people here—hot and unhot alike—just don't care about self-image as much for these few years because there's not really anybody new to impress. That's not a bad thing. There's a lot more room for free expression and not being self-serious. Also, if you start feeling claustrophobic, it's so easy to go into Philly and escape for a while. The train is at the bottom of campus and you can always decide to take the next train into the city and do some reading at a cafe or go out to dinner with friends.
