Date: Feb 03 2006 Major: Other (This Major's Salary over time) W&M helped me by having a reputation for serious students and low-to-no grade inflation. This definitely got me in the door for my first job, and has continued to cause persons to hold me in high esteem (sometimes I laugh at how they PRESUME I'm hard-working and smart just because I got into W&M). My work as an editor and later as section chief/publisher in a government setting has required diligence, knowledge, and research skills that I obtained at W&M—or, even more important, learned HOW to obtain. However, I wish that I had played a bit more at W&M and had tried out lots of different activities besides those aimed at a career in publishing. W&M students are serious scholars, but too many take themselves and their situations too seriously and don't do enough experimentation or have enough fun. I don't want the school to become another silly party place like UVa, but would like to see it become a bit more fun than it was and presumably still is.
