Major: Civil Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
I am an undergraduate civil engineering major from Hawaii. UHM really needs an overhaul of its administrative staff- they are mindless androids just going through the motions- no individuality, no effort to truly administer a meaningful valuable college experience to its students. This translates into sub-par student body with less than enthusiastic students that are wasting away the most valuable and enriching time in their lives. Regarding the previous posts about racial discrimination against whites- this is far from the truth. Of course UHM student body consists of a large asian composition and perhaps mixed polynesian; white is the minority here. And just because whites are the minority doesn't mean there exists discrimination against them. On the contrary, you have out of state white students come in and have the "general" mentality that they have superiority, whether it be intellectual, physical, mental, or social skills. Now in a state once a territory, that was once a Kingdom annexed by whites from United States, please don’t expect locals here to be fond of outsiders- particularly whites. FYI, I am white from the great state of Mass. Home of real pursuit of academia. The old clich: The past affects the present in large part rings true regarding ethnic tensions at UHM. Given, the local majority may not be intellectually inclined relative to their mainland counterparts, they are rich in spirit, rich in values, rich in history and culture, indeed the concept of Aloha exists and it is born by the local people of Hawaii.
