The only reason I give Mesa a neutral rating is because I have had SOME amazing professors; the rest have been shockingly awful. I cannot stress the importance of having to have much self-motivation to go to this school. Teachers will not motivate you, the ‘right out of high school kids’ will not motivate you, the counselors will not, I can go on. Point is, very rarely do you see anyone transferring or obtaining their AA before 4 years. People that go here normally do not appreciate school or value education. This could be because of the professors, who care very little about their students, or the actual students who come here.

Now let’s talk about the administration, counselors, etc. My goodness, please do not get yourself involved with these people unless you need to. One of the main reasons that students tend to stay so long is because their advisors, otherwise known as counselors, tell them to take classes that they do not need. The counselors will advise you to take a class, thinking that it transfers or is necessary for your major, yet you find out after you have completed the course, that you never needed it in the first place. Wow, what a waist of 16 weeks, and your money. I have talked to over 20 students who have been through this. Find all the information yourself if you can, contact the school you plan on transferring to first and ask them what they recommend. When you do find a counselor at mesa, make sure you ask for a reputable one, and stick with that counselor because if you do not, you will be told different information each time and it will confuse you.

Last but certainly not least, most classes suck. Most professors teach at Universities and can be more difficult because of this. Go to Ratemyprofessors.com and choose your teachers from there. I did this my last year at mesa and took all the great teachers. Do not take a teacher that is easy; take a teacher that is challenging with a great personality. This will get you ready for the University and enable you to do better when you get their.

Mesa college is very similar to High School, except larger. Therefore, you will not feel like you are truly in college. Sorry guys, if you want a better community college, aim for Grossmont or City College where students are more goal oriented and less party driven.

If you absolutely have to come here try to do the best you can in getting out within two years, follow the TAG agreement and transfer to a UC school rather than a state, because you will be more educated than most. Good luck
