Major: Economics (This Major's Salary over time)
Aside from UC Irvine's terrible Economics major, it does offer great bio, creative writing, and criminology programs. Here is the truth: This school lacks a huge amount of spirit mostly because UCI takes all of the UCLA and UC Berkeley rejects. Thus, everybody who "thought" they deserved better than UCI brings the university down. Too many people commute - this is laregely due to the all of the rich kids in the area (Newport Beach, Coronoa Del Mar, Laguna Beach, Irvine, Alieso Viejo, etc..) - who would want to leave a lush mansion for a crappy dorm?In addition the qualms above, most of the UCI student body are hardcore republicans of apathetic and will never engage in intelligent political discussion simply because they are too singleminded to do research into what is actually happening in the world. Nobody cares about politics at this school except the MSU. Oh, and did I mention there is a severe problem with Muslims v. Zionists? To tell you the truth, the only reason this school is not as good as UCLA and UCB is due to the horrible people they accept. If UCI only raised its standards, then it would only be a decade or so until UCI caught up with UCLA. In fact, we have UCLA professors and some students transferring here (yes, its true, this is not just propaganda) because the facilities at UCI are superior in many ways to the other top UCs (another fact: UCI has the most land and potential to grow into the largest, and most successful UC campus - itll take a couple of decades).Anyway, if you forget about the students, the professors in most programs (minus Econ) are awesome and the school has a lot to offer - you just need to make it happen yourself. The beach is not even 5 minutes away, the weather is lush, and the location cant get any better being inbetween LA and SD.Remember, UCI is not a bad school (its a top 10 public in the nation) - the students make it that way. If you want a good education, do the research into your program first, then make a decision. Dont go into Econ - its the major for ALL frat boys and ALL sorority girls thinking an Econ degree will put them right inline with a 6 to 7 figure salary. They all whine and bitch about EASY math work and never contribute anything to the classes. Do yourself a favor, and major in something better. And to everyone that says UCI sucks because it doesnt have a business major: Yes, UCI does have a business major, well, rather a graduate school of business. And yes, it is a good school (one of the top 40) - check US News and World Report). Oh, and as of last month, the board I sit on for undergrad to grad relations between the business school and UCI has announced that there should be an undergrad business major coming in 2007. Its not official, but that is the word.
