95% of NIU students come from blue collar or working class backgrounds. The academic programs available range from OK at best to not very good. NIU's one big plus is its close proximity to Chicago, thereby enabling students to go home on the weekends to work, play, etc. All in all, it is not one of the better public school options in Illinois if your objective is to get a quality education and a marketable degree.
