Major: English (This Major's Salary over time)
This might sound so cliche, but college is about what you make of it. I notice that many people come to FDU, expecting a party to come walking at their door every night, only to be upset that there isn't much to do when they come here (and thus complain on this website!). True, this school can get pretty boring on the weekends. Every college has its flaws. The school's lack of offering fun activities for students on weekends is one of them. However, there are plenty of clubs and such to be a part of in FDU. Don't expect the fun to come to you. Don't expect new friendships to come along if you're just sitting in your dorm room eating popcorn. Regardless of what college you go to, you have to take the initiative to find things to do. Go out there, join a club, meet new people, take advantage of the resources that are available! I think if more people did that, and actually gave it a chance, then maybe some people would have a better impression of FDU. As I said, it's not perfect, and things should be changed. Such as Public Safety. I think they're a bit ridiculous, esp. since FDU doesn't have a big crime rate like many other schools in NJ. Many students complain that they care more about writing up tickets and breaking up crowds than actually protecting students when it's needed. I never understood why they're so strict, and why it's necessary to have guard booths when there's rarely anybody in it! FDU is a beautiful campus, but it needs some renovation (such as the freshmen dorm rooms…i know you can't expect something glamarous, but it should be in better shape and not look so shabby..). As for the faculty, you'll find some people to be very friendly and helpful, while some seem like they don't know what the hell they're doing, but you'll get a mix bag like that in any college. People will always be people no matter where you go. But overall, FDU so far has offered a great education for me. The Education Department is wonderful, and so is the English and Theater Arts department. The only problems I notice with it, however, is that many literature courses aren't available because they're "a past or future FDU course," many which are REQUIRED for my major! Let me tell you, if you find something wrong in FDU or any college that you go to, TAKE THE INITIATIVE. Sure, you might not change the campus as a whole, but some people are actually willing to make those changes if you keep reminding them of the issue. Have people back you up if things aren't being changed. Have your parent(s) or guardian complain. Write to the school paper. This is your education. Don't expect FDU or any college to be perfect. Take college for what it is. It's a place to grow and make new friends, but it's not meant to be a non-stop party, or something that you see portrayed in a movie. At times it will be boring, if not lonesome, but that's part of growing up. Don't let the cons of a school underlook the pros. Take advantage of everything your school has to offer before you judge. And most importantly, have a sense of humor about it, it makes going to college a bit more enjoyable regardless if its FDU or Havard. Good luck!
