This is an excellent school for those people already with an undergraduate degree. If you want a well funded, beautiful campus to get your graduate, doctoral, or other post-undergraduate degree, this is certainly a fine choice. However, unless you know that you are capable of putting in dozens of hours of week for studying, reports, and homework only to make at best a B in most classes, do not bother going here. Teachers try very hard to keep students in the A level to about 10-20%. A B is indeed a very good grade in about 80% of classes. This sounds ok, but when you apply for grad school from Vandy with a 2.8-3.2 (which is roughly the average for the school), you will find yourself on the outs when compared to school with higher GPA averages or state schools that take less effort to make better grades. As for the environment and social life, Nashville is a very safe and clean town. The campus is gorgeous and money is everywhere. This is good. What is not good is that social interaction, fun things to do outside of class, and peer groups are sorely lacking at Vandy. Students often have a small group of friends that occassionally go downtown or goof off in the dorm rooms. The sports teams are dreadful and school spirit is non-existant. Also, the school is very expensive unless you are on scholarship. Resource centers, career advice, educational counseling are so unfamiliar to the student body that many students do not even realize that Vanderbilt has these features. Again, go for undergraduate work, not undergraduate studies.
