The bright side of UH is that the professors make all the difference once you are in the campus. Most of them are graduates from lofty and prestigious universities such as Columbia, UCLA, MIT, Cornell and Princeton. Their quality ot teaching can be really seen, they are passionate about what they want to convey and they really teach for the sake of learning and not merely to pass exams. For those who are especially majoring in Social sciences like Economics,Philosophy and Sociology; French and Art History should get the maximum benefit. I would give the teachers 10 thumbs up for their quality of teaching. Most of them expect more of what you are capable of and that motivates and challenges students even more. On the other side of the coin, UH is definitely NOT the place to make friends. This university is like a "watering hole" for Hawaiian high-school graduates who would only mingle in their own group from their high-school days, mingling in their tiny, nostalgic world of immaturity. I would describe them as rude, aggressive, impolite, self absorbed and close-minded individuals.Surprisingly, even the international students who are mostly from Japan, Korea and the Phillippines, are becoming clones of these high-school graduates. Mingling in their own 'same-language' world. Never being able to step out of their comfort zones. They would give anyone that stare, as if you had 3 heads. I am an international student my self and already I am feeling that sense of multicultural discrimination. Who or what was it in the first place that claimed UH as the best place to learn international business, relations, commerce? Were they blind or deaf? or just did not do enough research? Without a united student body and a striking image of community, none of those claims would ever be achieved. The mentality of the student body affects the culture and norms they are living in. Their mentality almost reaches the breaking point where alienation and segregation can almost be felt every second you step on campus. I would not know how long I want to stay here. It would be unpredictable and I am hoping to transfer as soon as possible. Its a real pity to see an exotic island being populated with no less than a bunch of stuck ups, phonies, snobs and broken-spirited youngsters. I guess Hawaii is not all paradise after all.
