The History Program at the U of S disappointed me. I was motivated and ambitious when I arrived as a transfer student in 2003 but by the time I graduated I felt as if I hadn't gotten what I paid for. My entire time there I was preparing for a M.A. degree in history but felt unprepared for classes when I started graduate school.

The professors are hit and miss. Some were engaging and helpful, others were hermits who left their offices only to teach. Lectures were always intelligent but there was never any class discussion. Not writing intesive. I was unable to develop decent writing skills, this still haunts me.
I was fortunate to go on the London Trip for Spring Break my junior year. This was a great experience but the class time was worthless. I also minored in Political Science which is a decent department with excellent Law School advisement by professors. Internships were available at senator's offices in the area. I completed two U.S. Senator's internships which helped my relationship with my professors, my own education, and helped me get into grad school. Most internships are available to students who ask.
The school is expensive, the registrar's office is horrid, and campus safety bullitens recommended that students stay on campus for their own good.
The social scene is great. House parties 5 nights a week, bars open as late as they can be with great specials, and decent bands play in the area.
Dorms were clean for the most part but certain ones(ie Leahy) were filthy.
So, if you're looking to get a history degree and not continue with higher education by all means, go to Scranton. If you're looking to get a better education and continue with a graduate degree, look elsewhere.
