I came to Franciscan a few years ago as a transfer student after spending two years at a Big Ten school. Therefore, I've seen both sides of the coin as far as the college experience goes, so here's the deal. After a cradle-Catholic life of mediocrity, I came here on a whim, and it has totally transformed my life. Franciscan is unlike any other university in the US; you are in for a very unique experience should you choose to spend your college years here.

First, the downside: the outlying town of Steubenville is the ugliest, most depressed, sketchiest place I've ever encountered in my life. Also, dorm life leaves much to be desired. While the dorms are aesthetically very nice and well-kept, the strict rules can be suffocating and the activities can be cheesy. I suggest moving off-campus; there are some decent, very cheap houses you can rent in walking distance from campus.

The upside: the campus itself BEAUTIFUL, idyllic & Pittsburgh is 40 min. drive away. The Catholic faith permeates the campus, from daily mass to your classes, to the activities on campus… you will truly come to live and walk in the Truth. My time at Franciscan has made me a better person in so many ways.

There is no way I could possibly sum up the people here. Though most everyone is Catholic, the student body is surprisingly diverse. You'll meet people from all 50 states, from sheltered homeschooled kids to partiers and converts… The common denominator is that everyone is striving to be a good person.

Academically, the school is stellar in theology and philosophy. Other majors, I've heard, are weaker, but you get to learn everything in the context of the Church. Thus, in History or Psychology, etc. Christianity is not treated as some interesting idea or a sociological datum, but as the ultimate truth. Also, a major difference from the state schools—all the classes are small (usually about 20-30 students) and your professors will get to know you. I have found that most of them aren't just scholars, but amazing people as well. Also, the school has an Austrian campus that about 150 students go abroad to attend every semester—a life-changing experience!!

I have never regreted coming here. It has been one of the greatest blessings of my life, one that, after I graduate, will stay with me forever. My hope in writing this is that it will somehow convey to someone in some small way a fraction of how great this school is. If you want to be educated and challenged not just academically, but as a person, you really should think (& pray!) about coming to Franciscan.
