Major: Journalism (This Major's Salary over time)
I graduated from Duquesne over years ago and have since guest-lectured and been on campus many times. I have known some professors, and I have friends with kids at Duquesne now. The school has changed in some ways since I went there, so I cannot speak to what you can expect walking into the dorms or into a classroom now.

But I can say that upon graduation, there are many, many post-graduate educational and career opportunities that stem from this campus. Your classmates alone will provide a good support network, starting a year or two after graduation. Professors aren't really plugged into the local business community to help, but there is a good career center and a commitment to internships at the University. It is regarded as a solid school with very good graduates. Plus, in the Western Pennsylvania region, there are many alumni in hiring positions.

In the area where I majored, Journalism and Communications are rival departments and their differences can cause confusion and problems for students. I would recommend a Journalism major so that you get the discipline of writing down, even if you want a job in public relations or advertising. The interns I have hired and interviewed over the years from Duquesne for jobs in the communications field have been sub-standard and are typically terrible writers. Journalism majors, on the other hand, are better writers. If I see the Duquesne student was an English or Journalism major, I tend to give them more consideration. PR majors have this odd view that PR professionals don't need to be good writers and tend to gravitate to events-planning, which is the low end of the pay scale in the PR profession. In short, if you want a good major in preparation for any discipline within communications, I would recommend journalism and steer clear of the Communications Department. Communications majors in general, possibly because this is a popular major for otherwise "undecideds" tend to be lightweights.
