This University is definitely not for everyone, however this is true of most schools. Do not come to this school for academics. If you are looking to be challenged you can forget it. The majority of the professors here do not care about teaching you to apply your knowledge to real life situations. Instead, they give lots of multiple-choice tests that only test how well you can memorize information. Overall, I have found the faculty to be quite friendly and to give DU credit; I have had two very amazing professors who I admire. Then again, I have had professors who barely understand the material they are trying to teach. Its kind of a hit or miss situation. Personally, I have found that making almost all straight A’s does not require a huge amount of effort. If that appeals to you then come here.

The student body here is very homogenous. Most of the students are white and come from upper class backgrounds. The university does have a small international population, however there is very little interaction between ethnic groups. In the past, DU has been named one of the least diverse schools in the country, which I would have to say is probably true. The typical DU student enjoys to party and ski/snowboard on the weekends. If you like the idea of skiing every single weekend then come here, it’s a plus for many students. There is also fairly heavy drug use (which, again you will probably find everywhere). Most students care very little about academics or how they do in school. I should also mention that nearly half of the students here are business majors; this may seem insignificant, but it really does affect the nature of the student body here. Frats and Sororities are huge here and they tend to dominate social life, so if you like that then come here. DU does have a moderately sized selection of clubs, however students are not involved in campus life or activities, making it feel like there is no sense of belonging here. I should also mention that the students here can be quite cliquey, at least the first year students. After Orientation week everyone has formed their own circle of friends for the year, making it hard to make new friends.

Some other things worth mentioning…the food is mediocre and can get very monotonous after a while. The freshman dorms are awful. I am not exaggerating! The rooms are very small, with brick walls and very poor lighting. Most people agree that it feels like a dungeon here. After your freshman year you can elect to live in nelson Hall (which was built a few years ago and is supposed to be quite nice) or you can live off-campus. The library is terrible and outdated and it’s very hard to find nice quiet places to study. The law school has really nice study rooms but these are only supposed to used by the law students, which is just stupid! Everyone should be able to use them or the university should invest equally in all the other academic buildings. Finally, campus safety here is terrible. There are new robberies or sexual assaults every week. There was even one student who had their car stolen at gunpoint. Campus safety is very ineffective…

If I had the choice to come here again I definitely wouldn’t. As my freshman year begins to wind down, I can confidently say that my experiences here have for the most part, been negative. I do know people who love it here though, and that’s great. Some people really enjoy the environment here; I was just not one of them. Luckily I am transferring to a school with excellent academics and a student body that actually cares about their education. Come to DU if partying is your first priority; if you’re looking for great academics and a diverse, involved, and supportive student body go elsewhere.

questionHi! Thanks for the review and I am so sorry about your experiences at University of Denver. Just for curiosity, you said that the sororities and fraternities dominate the social aspects of University of Denver. This is a big concern for me because I am wondering if there is a lot of hazing at the University of Denver. Is it true that there is hazing at this university? In addition, can you explain why most of the student body is arrogant, snooty, and close-minded? An awful lot of people are saying this about University of Denver. I would describe myself as a student who is not snooty and close minded. In addition, I would feel more comfortable in a friendlier environment. However, I know that there is no such thing as a perfect student body. In conclusion, if an individual just is a nice person who just wants to do the right thing, you would not recommend University of Denver? In your mind, is University of Denver really worth 46 grand a year? I find these details disturbing because I just want to be in a place where I feel comfortable.
responseMany people have shared their experiences about The University of Denver and they have said that they ae not quite satisfied about their teaching methodologies. It is known as the least diverse school in the country. The pedagogical methods that are applied here aren’t very helpful because they don’t give any advantage to students in their practical life. Most of the times multiple-choice questions are asked to judge student’s mastery over knowledge that is a very poor way to analyze someone’s ability of comprehension over something. Rote learning and the notion of memorization is the main idea to check pupil’s ability. Those students who are not very good at creative and analytical side can easily take admission here and gain all A’s because the knowledge they are delivering is based upon surface level and there is no role of in-depth knowledge. Apart from that the library of this university is very outdated because it doesn’t have good books in it. It also has campus security issues. Every week there are many mishaps that occur like sexual assaults and robbery. So from my side it’s a big NO for The University of Denver. Well!
