I just finished my freshman year at WMU, and my experience was mixed with some good and bad moments. If anyone is willing to take the time to read this review…I think it could be very helpful.

Western academics can be very beneficial, if you choose to put some effort into your classes. By not going to class, you are almost guaranteed to not do well. Very rarely do I know someone who received at most a B, who hardly attended the class. The professors are really starting to crack down on attendance, and often provide special extra credit opportunities to those who are in class. So my suggestion…just go. Even if you fall asleep, it's just better to be there.

As for the accessibility of professors…I never had a problem. They were always in their office during their hours, allowed students to schedule appointments with them, and were pretty good about getting back to your e-mails fairly quickly. Most of the professors I was with genuinely wanted their students to succeed. If they could tell an honest, and quality, effort was being put in, they seemed reasonably flexible.

The social scene was possibly my favorite part about Western. Not necessarily the drinking, or even the parties, but I always had so much fun with the friends I had there. Parties are very common, and I would consider WMU a big party school. It's been given the nickname "Wastern," which if you spend one weekend night in a student neighborhood, or in frat village…you'll see why. The opportunity to drink and be merry is definitely out there, but I also know some students who choose to avoid it.

I won't be returning to WMU, but that is because I've been born and raised in the same town, and want to get out of Kalamazoo. I came to Western for a certain sport, and after a season of a hellish ordeal, I decided to leave.

If WMU was in any other town, it'd be the perfect school for me. I would highly recommend Western Michigan University. Every student I've known there LOVES it!
