I came from out of state to pursue a degree in magazine journalism. Although the journalism department is what the school is best known for as far as areas of study go, I still felt that the majority of those within the department were intellecually uninterested. ideas were often trite and unsophisticated. no one really seemed to care or enjoy their work. more likely interests revolved around greek life, getting wasted, etc…also, the number of times people fabricated news stories for writing classes was more frequent than not, so academic honesty didn't fall high on the list either. I had two or three worthwhile journalism professors who actually knew what they were talking about: intermediate narrative writing (moen), magazine editing (moeller) to name a few, but overall, I would rather have attended northwestern or columbia and exchange the hands-on MU approach for a more intellectual and diverse student body and atmosphere. If you have no choice but to attend Mizzou, I would suggest taking the humanities sequence through the honors college. The brightest and most engaging professors are to be found in the honors college, and you learn a ton about world literature, philosophy and art. also, you'll run out of things to do in columbia in about 5 minutes.

VERY WASPY, suburban, wonder bread campus. VERY GREEK.

If you're from a big city, you'll be bored. if you have dark features, people will likely think you're of foreign descent. welcome to the midwest.
