i just finished my freshman semester at UHM and am more than pleased. i really look forward to heading back to the islands after winterbreak. i love my school and so far i could not see myself going anywhere else. I went to a preparatory high school and did well, i got accepted to some very good colleges but i chose to attend UHM because i always wanted to live in Hawaii and there was no better time for me to move than college. I was apprehensive going in because i had read so many poor reviews on this site, but i found that if you take them with a grain a salt, they are far from the truth. The dorms are old but they are far from uninhabitable. i enjoy my dorm and have made some really good friends by living there, i would definately recommend freshman live on campus. UHM is not a party school like other big universities on the mainland. there are no house parties, but if you want to drink you'll have plenty of opportunities. and if you're a stoner you'll definately find many people of your kind. im in the honors program and have found my coursework to be fine so far. Most classes you just need to show up (atleast once in awhile) and do some work and you will be fine. I think that UHM suits me so much because i found the perfect balance of screwing around, living in Hawaii, and doing well in school. Locals are not as unfriendly towards white kids as i was led to believe, and Honolulu is not too bad at all. There are lots of tourists in Waikiki but its also easy to get a job there and theres lots to do at night in Waikiki. The North Shore is awesome and a lot of kids spent their weekends there just camping out and hanging on the beach. It is a commuter school, but if you just step outside of your room and get involved you will be fine. My friends and i bought season tickets to the football games for 30 bucks and it was AWESOME to be at every game cheering for our school especially since we went undefeated this year.

overall UH is a great school, especially for the money. i am loving my college experience and i think anyone else can too, you just need to do some research and know what you're getting yourself into first. UH does run on Hawaiian time so dont stress if things happen later and less organized than most other universities. if you take things slow and make the most of everything, you will be fine and have a great time.
