I am an out of state student who just finished his third semester down at Bama. Honestly, I am not one of those out of state scholarship kids who is coming here because I get
free tuition, room and board and a laptop
In high school I was too busy drinking and smoking pot to get into the highly selective University of Illinois school system…so I went to Bama.

I was extremely excited about coming here my freshman year, but all of the excitment was vanquished by 2nd semester. THE GREEK SCENE RULES THE SCHOOL. There is no way to express that enough. I am from Illinois, and all my friends from high school are greek. If greek life was like it was back home(and the rest of the country) i surely would have went through with it. However, its nothing at all similar. The hazing is absolutely ABSURD here. A friend of mine was thrown down a flight of stairs in a dog cage and broke his arm. The administation covers all of this up because the deep pocketed alumni are all :gasp: rich, white, southern men who were greek themselves. The only school that is worse than Bama when it comes to this life style is Ole Miss.

Anyways, if your from out of state and want to be greek…be prepared for a culture shock. You have to dress like a complete buffoon. Frat guys wear shorts that dont even touch your knee…im talking 6-7 inches ABOVE the knee. They look like my grandpa. Polos, short-shorts, boat shoes (Sperrys), and Costa sunglasses. They all look the same. If you want to be greek and your from out of state, be prepared to make a HUGE adjustment in who you are. There are some perks about being greek here though, you have SICK parties and get to hang out with arguably the hottest college babes in the country. Be warned though, as a GDI (God Damn Independent) you wont be faring quite as well with the babes, infact 98 percent of the hot girls on campus(ALL SORORITY GIRLS!) wont even give you the time of the day if your not in a frat. However, I never had problems with hook ups.

The student body is pretty unintelligent. If your smart and want to be challanged, you MUST do the Honors program. The Blount Undergraduate Program is also AMAAAAAAAAAAAZING. I was in it and I met some of the most interesting and intelligent people on that campus which kept my sanity being a GDI in a sea of sorostitues and frat daddys.

Bottom Line: If your thinking about taking that SWEET scholarship and coming here from out of state…DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!! ITS A TRAP!!!!! message me if you have any questions…i got lots of answers

questionHow is Palmer Hall and the Mallet Assembly? Do you know anything about the engineering program at UA? Is there really nothing to do if you're not greek because it seems that UA has alot of activities and stuff to do?
questionIm interested in this school because it offers the major I want (music therapy) and seems like a pretty fun school. However, I am from California and your insight to the school kind of scared me. Anymore information you could provide will be greatly appreciated =)
questionDo they give you any shit from being out of state? i'm from new jersey and i want to apply there but i'm afraid they'll discriminate me. is it really not that great of a school?
My son plans to go there in the fall, on a full-ride scholarship. (We're out-of-state.) I'm a little concerned about the Greek dominance and conformism, though. Would love to hear more from you about this! When you get a chance, please email diane_ _email_removed_ Thanks!!
questionHow much scholarship money did you recieve?
I am currently a freshman engineering student and absolutely hate it here. I was going to rush but realized that it would not work with my work load. There is nothing to do here if you want to have fun. Should I transfer to Univ of Florida or a SUNY? I'm worried that the academics will be much harder.
