All in all, I believe I couldn't have picked a better place for my undergraduate education. The people here—students, professors, TAs, staff in the dining halls, and even administrators—are overwhelmingly friendly, warm, and accepting. There are exceptions, of course, but by and large students who belong to all different social groups (ie outdoorsy kids, frat members, preps, jocks…) are friends with and certainly appreciate the other groups on campus. If you do research about professors on the student assembly website you can find phenomenal classes to take and professors to develop relationships with. I have loved every one of my professors so far save one, and they were all really helpful in office hours and via email. These professors are at the top of their fields, but they work at a school filled with undergraduates. This means two things. First, most of them truly enjoy teaching us. Second, we get tons of research opportunities. Without a lot of grad students sucking up the research funds like at other Ivies, Dartmouth provides tons of opportunities for undergrads to do research, ON TOP of providing what I think is objectively the most intimate undergraduate attention and education in the Ivy league (at least). Dartmouth also has phenomenal study abroad programs and policies, and the Dplan, which allows us to arrange our time on campus to suit our own research and internship needs, further facilitates an international and more independent education.that said, my first year at Dartmouth was tough. It's a different experience for everyone, but for me it was just that I came from a rather poor public school in suburban Detroit and had less training in crucial college skills like writing research papers or taking exams. Dartmouth (like any school) is what its students make of it. If we want to get a lot from the school, we have to put a lot of effort in to it. We take harder classes, add a major or a minor or two, look for research opportunities and internships all over the world, etc. Plus, students here are generally really involved, so we're stressed out quite a bit. But its all right because we work hard play hard and really, really like it that way.On that note, the DOC is awesome. If you're not into the frat scene, which a fair number of people here aren't, you have the option of going on day or weekend hiking/climbing/canoing/etc trips with the DOC. It's absolutely fantastic, and spending a weekend in a cabin with your closest friends—OR people you've never met before—can make you feel at ease like a night out drinking on campus never would.I can't believe I only have two years left here. This place is phenomenal. Come visit us and we'll be happy to show you.
