Major: English (This Major's Salary over time)
I just completed my first semester at Dowling (English major on the creative writing track) and I can honestly say I'm quite satisfied with this school. It has a very intimate, personal feel (they aren't kidding when they it's a "personal college") and the faculty truly cares about their students. Most professors are available to help you with problems you need—as another reviewer mentioned, their offices are always open, even after posted hours. Professors often become friends (albeit friends you may want to avoid when you skip class), so if that isn't your thing, you may want to pass over Dowling. There also isn't much of a social life if you're a big partier (Dowling's known as a "dry campus", so no alcohol allowed in the dorms. I am sure some people have gotten away with it, but Dowling is concerned with its image, so watch out with this one). The campus itself is so small (but very pretty…I like how it is right on the river), so it's hard to hide laughsI find that Dowling is pretty decent with its sports teams and extracurricular activities. Loads of fun, sponsored trips (they have a lot of trips to foreign countries such as Ireland, Spain, and England) throughout the year, as well as to areas in and around the USA). It's really what you make of it—if you want to get involved and have fun, you have to seek out the opportunity yourself and make the best of your experience! If you're the type of person that enjoys an intimate, homey feel to your school (with small-sized classes, personal attention from faculty, and good, clean fun), you'll love Dowling. If you prefer to party and hope to find a college that is big and anonymous (with huge lecture halls and professors that don't even take attendance), then you may want to skip Dowling.
