As a very introverted person who only likes to have 2-3 close friends and then spend every waking moment with them the social environment at Sarah Lawrence worked out well for me. I also had a nice group of acquaintances in case my friends weren't around. However, if you expect to be at a kegger every night SLC is not the college for you. my Jr. year I lived in "the party house" and there were huge parties there almost every week but I didn't have that type of experience any other year. There were plenty of stuck up elitist people walking around but I just had nothing to do with them. As far as academics are concerned SLC is excellent. I have talked to many masters students who didn't go into the depth of study I did in some of my Undergraduate courses. I now work at a well ranked large private university and the type of work I see students do here is nothing compared to what was expected of us at SLC. Even though the school is known for Liberal Arts education I had no problem being accepted into 3 medical schools (even though there were about 11 other pre-meds on campus and I opted not to pursue medicine). The rest of my education focused primarily on African-American studies. I don't know of another school where i could have explored my interests and completed the requirements for med-school so easily. SLC isn't the place for everyone and on a trip back with some GED students I was teaching in 2006 I felt the place had changed quite a bit. The students seemed a lot more "normal" and "safe". Some of my old professors agreed with me but, from what I hear, rampant individualism is back on the upswing. If you are a straight woman don't go there planning to find your husband because there aren't many men. If you want wild parties all the time don't go there. If you don't want to be challenged in every course don't go there. But if you are "different" and want a fantastic education with NYC around the corner this may be the place for you.
