Let me say it straight out - this comment will irritate most BYU students and alumns - they are not known for being tolerant of any criticism of BYU. So if you can't accept criticism of BYU, please skip this comment.

I got my BS degree here and spent 4-1/2 years to earn it. As a female student, I felt far more pressure to date and get married than to succeed in academics - and the GPA I earned at this place showed it. I spent so much time trying to get dates on Friday and Saturday nights and to Firesides on Sunday, and working on making myself the kind of girl that could get those dates, that my grades went by the wayside. And after 4-1/2 years at BYU, I little to show for all those efforts. I had a mediocre GPA, no good job opportunities, and worst fate of all, no husband. It's somewhat demoralizing to hear others at BYU say

Oh my gosh - she's a senior and not engaged. What's WRONG with her?
while you yourself are an unattached senior girl. That description pretty much sums up the over-arching theme of BYU.

BYU is fine if you are religious. Girls who went there and dropped out to get married invariably consider BYU a fine institution. But, it is not so fine if you not religious. There is no tolerance for opposing viewpoints. The desirability of the male population is dependent on one factor only - whether they went on a mission. The students are like sheep - e.g., the entire campus comes to a dead stop when the flag is raised or lowered on that big flag pole in the midst of campus. Roommates will rat you out if you don't follow the Honor Code - they honestly believe they are doing their duty to save the roomies soul.

There is little involvement in true charitable work (e.g., something that helps improve the lives of the LIVING). Instead of the scintillating political discussions you'll hear on other campuses, at BYU the topic du jour is church doctrine or who was recently appointed as a general authority. By and large, my experience was that the female population wasn't really committed to succeeding, unless you call obtaining an MRS degree a success. The male population is more committed, because they know they will eventually need to support their families of 6+ children, and so that their wife (god forbid) won't have to work.

You are required to take 7 semesters of religion, which were all boring (I couldn't find a single one that really excited me), and they won't count if you make the wise decision to transfer to another school before graduation. You are criticized if you don't follow the flock and go to church.

Bottom line - this is the school for you if you are religious and don't mind others making your business theirs and making decisions for you. If you are not religious, do not believe what you might hear, that BYU is accepting of all faiths and beliefs. I regret coming to this school and regret missing out on a true college experience.

Responses
responseNo offense, but didn't you know that BYU is very CHURCH supported? How did you think you could get the education that you got so cheaply? Didn't you realize that church supported schools tend to be very religiously oriented, homogeneous and close minded? I need to tell you this now? Frankly, what were you thinking when you applied?
responseAll I have to say is amen sister. Sure it is a church college… but other such institutions are first and foremost a college of education. BYU, on the other hand, is far more insistent on the religious aspect - even going as far as forcing professors to integrate religion into their curriculum or face unemployment. Definitely made business classes unusual. Indoctrination is the name of the game. Education only happens so BYU can land credentials and a few government handouts.
