The UIC experience is dreadful. No one at this university cares about the students. If you try to talk to an advisor you will be insulted. Many professors are unprepared and many of the departments have a hard time holding on to good professors. If you complain your voice will not be heard—rather it will be drowned out in the sea of fools that attend this university.

On the plus side, the tuition is cheap; however, you get what you pay for. There are a few great professors at this school, sure, but overall the place is an intellectual graveyard. Often you will be in classes with students who are content to get C's and D's just to get their degree. I did not observe a whole lot of learning going on at UIC.

There are usually 7 or 8 crimes committed in the area every year. Most of them are robberies but every now and then there is a rape. I haven't heard of any murders in the vicinity of the university.

If your department is small then don't expect to be able to take any electives. Sure, the course catalog is chock full of cool sounding courses but most of them are never actually offered. Usually they stick to the core courses and you have to specially request an elective. This typically takes a petition and for undergraduates I've never seen a successful petition to get any class offered. The college just doesn't care.

Many people commute to school (I was a commuter myself). This means that it is hard to organize social gatherings among people in your major. Also, if there are any group projects you need to do for a class it's very hard to come up with a time to collaborate since many people also work. If you're thinking about commuting yourself I'd strongly advise against. Commuting quickly becomes a drag and a drain on your energy and resources. By the time I was done with classes and arrived home in the evening all I wanted to do was relax because I was so tired from all the walking, trains, buses, etc. you have to deal with if you want to commute.
