Major: Architecture (This Major's Salary over time)
I attended IDTI right after my high school graduation and 15 months later I received my Associates Degree in Architectural CAD Drafting. The college is not for everyone. It worked perfect for me because I never planned to attend college after high school and in 15 months I was done and most importantly I was ready to hit the work field, which I must say other colleges do not prepare you for. The college focuses on teaching and preparing you for real life work place not on the aesthetics of their campus and social life that larger colleges do. Once I graduated IDTI assisted with my first drafting job. From there I was inspired to attended NYIT to finish my BA and at the same time have a growing career. The starting salary for an entry level draftsman is truthfully not that great, but is significantly above the salary of an uneducated and unskilled high school graduate. While attending NYIT I started my own drafting business and left my drafting position at my current job at the time. To make a long story short, as I still pursue the endless trail to my BA I have an advantage over students at NYIT because of real work place experience and at the same time make a lot more money than what an average college student would make during and right after graduation. IDTI provided me with the skills to succeed in this field, its what you do with it after that counts. Today I have been an IDTI Alumni for 4 years, a part time college student at NYIT for 2 years, a business owner for 2 years, and a lead architectural draftsman for one year. I make over six figures a year between my business and current job, well over what the average architect would make. Be versatile in this field, hungry and theres no way you will fail. Keep up to date with the newest AutoCAD programs and dont be afraid to start using others such as Vector Works and Revit. Dont just stay with one focus on drafting such as just residential, the economy is unstable these days. Even though I learned to draft residential and Im finishing school to become an architect, Ive learned and became an expert on drafting millwork, steel fabrication, and 3d rendering, be versatile. This is what IDTI did for me, and I can not thank that school enoughIm only 24 years old, I drive a new Cadillac, new Honda CBR600RR, and get hammered almost every weekend at some of the best clubs and bars around. Its all about HUSTLING and VERSATILITY people.
