During my transfer process, Mason representatives told me transfers are guaranteed on-campus housing. A couple months later, I received my acceptance letter only to find out that
Mason cannot accommodate all on-campus housing requests
George Mason straight up lied to me. I later found out this is apparently an ongoing problem as 40-60% of on-housing campus transfer requests are denied every year.

In short, George Mason lied to me simply because they wanted my 70$ application fee. If they are going to blatantly lie to prospective students, imagine actually BEING a student. I also heard Mason parking is terrible and can't accommodate all students (big surprise here).

CAUTION to all prospective students: Everyone thinks Mason is a gateway school into the Govt. and Govt. related Washington jobs. Have you ever heard of Georgetown? American University? The George Washington University? Those schools are in D.C. too and they are a lot better than Mason. Mason only gets the leftovers.

Between a Georgetown double-major who speaks 3 languages and a regular George Mason student, who do you think is going to get the Govt. job??? Mason is the school that EVERYONE got into. Remember that. In Washington, if people found out you went to Mason, their enthusiasm for you dies.

Washington D.C. rule of thumb:

  • Georgetown students are held in high-esteem.
  • George Washington students are often negatively stereotyped as close-minded rich kids but certain programs are held in very high esteem.
  • American University students are lower on the totem pole than GTown and GW, but great faculty and Government departments are very respected in Washington.
  • Mason is dead last.
  • Employer:

So you went to Georgetown I presume?

    Applicant: "No, sir."

    Employer:

Ah, I see. You must be a George Washington Man eh?

    Applicant: "No, Sir. Not quite."

    Employer:

American University? I was under the impression you attended school in the city?

    Applicant:

Well, almost. I graduated from George Mason.

    Employer:

Oh my lord! I forgot I had a dentist appointment…right now. But I'll be in touch.

responseWow—this is ridiculous. GMU is a public institution. GU, GWU, and AU are all private. Did you ever think that not everybody can afford a private education? Not to mention, GMU doesn't have a 100% acceptance rate as you imply. It's hovering more around the 52% range. I apologize that the institution isn't Harvard with a 10% acceptance rate. You're an idiot.
responseWow, uh, funny story: I applied for a job as an intern at a software engineering firm in DC as an undergraduate at George Mason University. I was happily given the job. A Georgetown GRADUATE applied for a similar position and was turned down. You're a moron.

Did you even ever attend Mason?

    responseMason = cheap

    American/GW/Georgetown = $$$$$$$$$$
