Major: Art & Design Department (This Major's Salary over time)
I was pretty let down as far as this school goes. I have mixed feelings on the cirriculum for my particular major - I started out with semi-unrelated studio classes, though it seems that this is something that is inevitable in most schools. We've focused a lot on the design process, but it's been difficult for someone who wants to jump into their concentration. While the faculty have been somewhat helpful, it seems as though you're trained to produce a certain look, and most of the artwork that the students produce in the art program looks the same as everyone else's. While the creative process is emphasized, it's squeezed into a timeline that isn't always sufficient for the students to put their work to the highest potential. The field is extremely competative, and if you're looking for a school that is going to help you to get to such a level, Kutztown is not the place.Kutztown is not the warm and friendly place that is promoted on campus tours and in advertisements. Most of the students there have a pretentious attitude about going to college and There are pretty much two groups of people: Those who party excessively, and those who condemn the partiers. If you don't fit into one of those categories, then you will not make friends at kutztown. There are no individuals at this school, just a bunch of impersonal clones. Most of the students are actually transfers who go home on the weekend. As mentioned before, the dining options are subpar at best. It seems as though the school is trying to offer healthier options, but most of the healthier items are more expensive. Maybe this is a push for the students to use the fitness center, which isn't too shabby. There is nothing to do in Kutztown if you don't have a car or a method of transportation other than walking. There is one excellent hole-in-the-wall record store, a thrift store, and restaurants down town (also a bar or two), but apart from that, you need to take the highway to get anywhere.Despite the negative things mentioned, I should make note that the school library does have an excellent collection of film (many from the criterion collection) that is widely available to all students.
