Major: Mechanical Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
Okay. I thought about each point and have marked A-/B+/B etc on every aspect VERY CAREFULLY. So am not just doing this for the sake of doing it. This is the real assessment.

Let me make this short but informative:

  • Coursework: Some courses are a cruise. They are open book and take home exams. Some are hard. You have very little time and grading is tough. It really depends on your major. I have so far taken ~ 35 credits. I would say that coursework all in all IS NOT THAT CHALLENGING. You do not need to slog. You only need to work hard enough.
  • Instructors: Most instructors here are nice. They know what they are doing. Some of them are really really good. Most would tell you if they do not know the answer instead of pretending to know it and say something wrong. Instructors are easily approachable. And they reply to your e-mails really fast.
  • Climate: Pretty good I must say. Summer - Max is ~95 in day and ~ 60 at night which is pretty cool. Winter snows a lot. Average Rain. Climate is not that big of a problem except winter may be.
  • Transformation: Very hard to change rules. If you do not find something good, it would take you forever to change it or let the school know. People do not want to change. If you have ideas, you'd have to probably wait 1 yr before letting them come into reality.
  • Mormons: Nice people. Friendly. But not open to outside thoughts. Most mormons know nothing else about the world. Are closed in their box. Very little General Knowledge. Proud People who Seem to have no regrets.
  • Atmosphere: No drugs. No alcohol. No sexual material. Very clean school. No caffiene/coffee. This is a very good thing about it.
  • Campus: Pretty nice.
  • Surrounding Area: Okay. Not happening at all. Pretty dead. Lots of restuarants though.
  • Sports: BYU is pretty big on sports like most schools. Good equipment, courts, fields etc. Pretty good. Have a bad student gymnasium though. Pretty bad.
  • Library: 3rd in the USA. Awesome. No problems at all.
  • Academics as a whole: It is okay I would say. BYU DROPPED IN US NEWS RANKINGS FROM 79 TO 113. SEEMS LIKE THE SCHOOL IS GOING DOWN A LITTLE. Nothing spectacular about the M E C H A N I C A L E N G I N E E R I N G program. It is good. But could be a LOT BETTER !!!!!!!
  • On a scale of 1 - 20 (20 BEING LIKE HARVARD AND 19 BEING YALE OR SOMETHING), overall, including everything, including fees, climate, level of challenge, people, campus, dorms, apartments, mormons etc etc, I WOULD RATE BYU AS 12 and a school like University of Texas Austin may be 16.
