There is nothing special at this school. It's a shame because it has potential, but it's ruined by the student body. I feel I got a good education. The academics are OK, but the social scene is terrible. Most people leave on the weekends. The majority of the students are unfriendly and obnoxious. I know it's not Hardvard, but I was surprised by the stupidity I've witnessed here. The campus feels like a large high school. Many of the buildings leak during the rain. The look of the campus is inconsistent and mostly hideous (the area around the East Lagoon is decent). DeKalb is a cultural and environmental wasteland. It's windy and flat. It has the problems of a big city with a fraction of the culture. All positive aspects of this school can be found at any deccent university. There are muggings off-campus fairly reguarly. The teachers are pretty good and the people at the counseling and student development center are good. People in this town are terrible drivers and bikers/pedestrians are regularly hit. I've almost been hit at least a dozen times on my bike while following all traffic laws. Moreover, this is the kind of place where people yell "faggot" out their windows at random pedestrians. Don't go to this school unless you're a wannabe gang-banger or aspiring frat-boy. I would not go here again even if they offered me a scholarship. It's pretty sad how lame this school is, considering college is supposed to be an experience of a lifetime. There is nothing at this school that you won't find at Illinois State or U of I. I'm making the best of my last year here. If I play my cards right, I won't so much as set foot in this town again. I don't mean to sound ungrateful. I got some grants here and I love my on-campus job. However, the negatives FAR outweigh the positives. My brother told me I would probably hate this school, and I should have listened to him.
